Podcast "Book Club" Meetup: In the Dark Season 2!

  • House of Pod 2565 Curtis Street Denver, CO, 80205 United States (map)

First of all, this event is a book club, but for podcasts. Every month, we choose a different show, listen to it independently, then come together to talk about it.

This month we're listening to season two of In the Dark, a critically acclaimed true crime series from APM Reports. This season follows the case of Curtis Flowers, a man who has been tried six times for the same crime. "He's won appeal after appeal, but every time, the prosecutor just tries the case again. What does the evidence reveal? And how can the justice system ignore the prosecutor's record and keep Flowers on death row?"

I missed season one, but after hearing tons of good things about season two I tried the first episode a couple weeks ago. This is very much a Serial-inspired project, with perhaps a greater focus on the investigation and justice and a lesser focus on storytelling and character.

Season two comprises 11 episodes, and they are all available now. Let's try to listen to all of it so we can have a spoiler-filled discussion.

Possible discussion questions: How much true crime is too much true crime? Should we draw a distinction between true crime and journalism about crime? What makes one of these true crime investigations pop, compared to the myriad competitors? Does Curtis's story speak to any broader societal issues?
